Speed dating events are wildly popular these days, as many people no longer have the time or patience to devote to the uncertainty of blind dates. Also known as round-robin dating, speed-dating or singles parties, the speed dating events listed below should provide an excellent starting point for anyone hoping to meet that special someone. I’ve also included some basic speed dating tips and information to better help you prepare for your big night.
If you need even more information on the subject, type one of the following terms into Google or Yahoo: speed dating London, speed dating Chicago, speed dating Events, speed dating NYC, speed dating Los Angeles, speed dating Toronto, speed dating Hong Kong, speed dating UK, Asian speed dating, and speed dating New York. You’ll be amazed at all the information available on speed dating events in the U.S. and abroad.
What is Speed Dating?
So what is speed dating? Basically, it’s a dating system which allows singles to meet a large number of possible dates within a short period of time. The invention of the system is credited to Rabbi Yaacoy Deyo, and the first event took place at Pete’s Café in Beverly Hills in 1998.
The assumption of speed dating is that most people know rather quickly if they’re attracted to someone. Also, speed dating assumes that first impressions are often lasting ones, so three to eight minutes with a person may be enough to determine your level of compatibility.
During speed dating events, men and women engage in a series of short dates (usually 3 to 8 minutes in length). At the end of each time period, a signal is given and participants move on to the next date. They also mark on a sheet whether or not they would be interested in dating the person they just spoke with.
At the end of the event, these sheets are turned in to the host. If both participants in a date indicated an attraction, then their contact information is forwarded to both parties. From there, the couple can arrange a longer date on their own.
Speed dating events are especially popular in the U.S., U.K. and Canada. Events are often organized around a certain age range or other niche group. These may include members of a certain religion, ethnicity, sexual preference, education level, or income bracket. No matter who you are, there’s a speed dating event to meet your needs.
Top Speed Dating Events
To help you get started, I’ve put together a list of five top speed dating events. Between them, they cover every state in America and many countries abroad.
Cupid.com/Predating – The largest speed dating service on the planet, Cupid.com/PreDating holds monthly events in over 160 cities. In the U.S., events are available in over 40 states.
The average cost of an event runs from $20 to $35, and each date will last for six minutes. Held in upscale restaurants and bars, participants will have the opportunity to meet up to 12 dates in a night (the event lasts less than 2 hours).
After meeting each single, just mark on your Match Sheet who you would like to know better. If one of your dates does the same for you, then you’ll receive their contact information within 24 hours. On average, more than two-thirds of participants can expect to match with at least one person.
FastLife.com – Founded in 2002, FastLife also claims to be the largest speed dating service in the world. They have operations in five different countries, and U.S. events are held in cities such as Miami, Los Angeles, New York, San Diego, Chicago, Boston, Seattle, Houston, Atlanta, Detroit, Phoenix and Dallas.
Two different options are available for FastLife customers. The first is known as Evolved Speed Dating, and it costs $49.95. Participants are guaranteed between 10 and 15 dates per night with people from their preferred age range. Dates last seven minutes each, and 90% of customers match with at least one person.
The second option is known as Prestige Speed Dating, and it’s geared towards upscale professionals. Each event costs $99.95, and a background check is performed on each participant. Events are held in upscale locations, and complimentary champagne or cocktails are provided upon your arrival. Dates are seven minutes in length, and a personal consultant will contact you a day or two before the event to tell you a little about the people you’ll be meeting.
8 Minute Dating – These speed dating events have been covered by USA Today, The Today Show and Fox News. They’ve hosted thousands of events around the globe, and round-robin dating is regularly held in over 70 U.S. cities.
For a cost of $35 to $45, you’ll have eight dates which last eight minutes each. After the 8th date, a mix and mingle period is available; with up to 100 participants, this gives you a chance to meet those who weren’t available during the eight minute dates.
When you get home, log on to the 8 Minute Dating website and enter the names of the people you want to see again. Over 90% of customers meet someone they want to date, and the feeling is mutual over 60% of the time.
DateSwitch.com – This service specializes in San Diego speed dating, Atlanta speed dating, Raleigh speed dating and San Francisco speed dating. Events cost $35 up to a week ahead of time; after that, the cost rises to $45. If you don’t meet anyone you’re interested in, you can attend another event for free.
Each date lasts five minutes, and you’ll receive an email the next day indicating if you have any matches. On average, 75% of participants will have at least one match, and many will have two to three matches.
New York Easydates – For the busy professional in New York City, this service holds speed dating events at various trendy spots in Manhattan. The cost to participate often ranges from $30 to $45.
The service has been in business for over eight years, and customers can choose whether to have 10 dates, 20 dates or even 40 dates in one evening. If you have to cancel, you’ll receive a full refund with five days notice of cancellation. If you give 24 hours notice, you can be transferred to another event at a later date.
Speed Dating Tips
Whether you’re an old pro or just getting started, these speed dating tips should help you have a fun and successful night with plenty of interest from the opposite sex.
- Appearance – Make sure you look your best. Nobody will be interested in dating a slob.
- Be Prepared – With such a limited time to talk, have an idea of what you will say beforehand.
- Be Confident – Look your date in the eye and project confidence.
- Smile – A relaxed smile is a great way to put your date at ease.
- Body Language – Don’t slouch. Maintain good posture during your date. You might also lean forward while your date is speaking to indicate interest in what they’re saying.
- Avoid Awkward Pauses – If possible, try to keep the conversation flowing in the limited time you have.
- Don’t Pressure – If you get someone’s contact information, send them a short email expressing interest. If they don’t reply right away, resist the urge to send another email.
- Have A Good Time – While it’s great to meet that special someone, keep in mind that speed dating events are also about having fun. Loosen up.
- Don’t Get Drunk – Getting drunk during the event will hurt your chances of gaining interest. You might also say something that you’ll regret later.
